The Art Scholarships student will develop the experimental protocol at the Center for Fire Safety Engineering (University of Edinburgh) and installed at UCD for the majority of the experimental manipulations.
This Art Scholarships project combines the dynamism of fire and earth systems research and builds on an existing cooperation betweenUCD and the University of Edinburgh. The work has an interest in climate change and adaptation, management of peatlands carbon stocks against the risk of underground smoldering fires and basic research.

The Art Scholarships project is funded by European Research Council, as part of a Starting Grant awarded to project-co-ordinator Dr. Tine De Moor.

Art Scholarships In this subproject, you will be in charge of analyzing the long-term development of institutions for collective action across Europe –concentrating on NW-Europe and Southern Europe, on the basis of a number of large datasets, hereby focusing on the emergence, change and dissolution of such institutions and the role of exogenous factors such as urbanization, agricultural change, changes on the labour market in provoking such dynamics etc. Besides this study on aggregated data, the PhD will furthermore perform a number of case-studies to get a more detailed understanding of the interaction between these institutions and exogenous changes.

You will be based at Utrecht University, and be part of the research team led by Dr. Tine De Moor and will as such also be part of the department of social and economic history led by prof. Jan Luiten van Zanden and prof. Maarten Prak.

Qualifications

a (research) master's degree in economic and social history, or in economics or another social science with shown interest in (economic and social) history;
a theoretical background and a strong interest for relevant theory;
an outstanding record of undergraduate and Master's degree work;
the ability to work with large datasets.

Terms of employment

We offer a PhD position (1,0 fte) with a one year contract beginning July 2011. After a positive evaluation this contract can be extended to a maximum of two more years (a total of three years maximum).

Salary will be rising from € 2.042,- a month (before taxes) during the first year to € 2.492,- a month during the third year on a fulltime basis. We also offer solid benefits.

PhD students, also referred to as doctoral candidates, are expected to take courses at the N.W. Posthumus Institute, the research school for social and economic history.

Leicester Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit PhD Art Scholarships Studentship

Art Scholarships a primary cause of preventable brain damage after cardiac surgery is the brain of embolic debris (particles and air bubbles in the blood) shower. Embolism impede the flow of blood that can lead to tissue damage and / or stroke. This project is part of a larger British Heart Foundation (BHF) study that uses computer simulations of patient-specific effects of embolism on cerebral blood flow during the operation predict. To computer simulations have the potential to be a clinically useful tool for injuries infusion modeling, prediction of brain damage, and provide direct measures. The Art Scholarships goal of our project is to expand existing BHF Doppler ultrasonic detection methods embolism using the simulation of a "virtual patients ". The role of the students will decide whether our virtual patient models are correlated with valuable information about the prognosis of cerebral perfusion of patients with physical damage magnetic resonance (MR) images. The Art Scholarships project will provide data to develop models for angiography of the cerebral arteries, the combination of patient-specific information on generic models of the microvasculature. Prediction of ultrasonic monitoring during the operation are based, are compared with the results of MRI scans and neuropsychological testing. Our team works closely with surgeons and doctors in university hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust has established a record of research in medical physics. The project will allow the education of students in medical imaging techniques (ultrasound and MRI), clinical research methods and modeling of vascular physiology. We Art Scholarships are looking for a hard-working, highly motivated students with good math skills and communication an interest in working in a clinical setting.

Art Scholarships the successful applicant's main task will be to undertake participant observation work in two Bristol pilot areas (South Bristol and East Bristol) to explore the best uses of social marketing techniques in gaining community support for the 20 mph limits. You would make contact with community leaders and active citizens and work with them on projects and activities, thus making a contribution to the campaigning itself. However, your focus would be on observation (backed up with other forms of data gathering (such as unstructured and semi-structured depth interviews) to build up case study evidence that would feed into a model of best practice. Scholarships Within the Defects in SemiConductors (DiSC) group, a position is available for a motivated researcher for experimental research in the field of defects in Cu(In/Ga)Se2 (CIGS) and related materials. Solar cells with a CIGS absorber layer are presently intensively studied because of their high efficiency at low fabrication cost. Although Scholarships defects in the absorber layer are generally considered as detrimental for the efficiency due to their impact on free carrier lifetime, little is known about their structure and its link with their electrical activity. The Scholarships project will, on the one hand, focus on defect characterization of actual solar cell structures. Scholarships on the other hand, large single crystals of CIGS and related materials will be investigated with various spectroscopic techniques (UV-Vis and IR absorption and luminescence spectroscopy, electron magnetic resonance, deep-level transient spectroscopy) to obtain a deeper insight in the structure of the dominant electrically active defects in them.

Profile

Licentiate Scholarships, Master in Physics, Applied Physics (engineering), Chemistry or Materials Science (engineering). Candidates who will obtain their degree in this academic year (2010 – 2011) are also encouraged to apply.

Strong interest in experimental solid state physics and/or chemistry (relevant experience considered as an advantage)

Obtaining a degree at the Politecnico di Torino

To graduate at the Politecnico di Torino, students must attain a total of 180 credits, including exams and the final dissertation. The time required to graduate is approximately 6 semesters. However, the effective duration is also dependent upon each student’s capacity.

Please note that scholarship recipients must attend their program for its entire length (3 years – 180 credits).
Attendance to the activities at the Verrès Campus is mandatory.
Students who have already attended other university courses can ask for a credit transfer up to a maximum of 10 credits per year (30 credits in total). Please note that credits achieved in preparatory courses or in the first year/second year in systems where preuniversity education lasts 10/11 years cannot be taken into account.

Selection criteria

Applicants will be selected based on their previous academic career and on their Curriculum Vitae.

Amount of the scholarship

The gross amount of the Verrès Campus scholarship is 10.000 Euro per year (30.000 Euro for the complete period). The exact net sum is dependent upon the individual tax conditions of each student, which can be verified only upon the arrival of the student.
The amount of the scholarship will not be increased in case the student will need more time to graduate than indicated.
The allocation of the scholarship is dependent upon the submission of the original documentation, which must correspond with the documentation attached to the application form (see the “Selection outcomes” section below).
Payment of the scholarship occurs periodically. The first instalment is dependent upon the possession of the relevant documentation (residence permit, Italian fiscal code, and bank account in the name of the scholarship recipient), all obtainable upon arrival in Italy.

Requirements to maintain the scholarship

Given that it is not possible to combine the benefits received from more than one scholarship, students who are assigned another study grant while receiving the Verrès Campus scholarship must promptly notify the Politecnico di Torino.
Payment of the scholarship will be suspended if the academic performance of the recipient does not meet a satisfactory level.
In case the recipient does not regularly attend the activities at the Verrès Campus, the scholarship will be revoked.

The study will engage with many of the key questions concerning a form of textile production dominated by women, its place within the female economy, and its position within a wider nexus of trade and fashion in nineteenth century Britain and Europe. The hand-knitting of lace had an important place in the economy and culture of the Shetland islands in the nineteenth century and today is still practiced by a small number of skilled knitters, not as a heritage craft but as a living skill. The collection of Shetland lace in Shetland Museum which forms the starting point of this project is part of a the largest collection of historical hand-knitting in the UK and moreover, a collection which is firmly embedded in local culture and identity. This project aims to illuminate the historical significance and relevance of this ‘commonplace craft'.

The project is a collaboration between the Department of History at Glasgow University and Shetland Museum and Archives. The successful candidate will be working with Professor Lynn Abrams and Dr Marina Moskowitz at the University of Glasgow, and Dr Carol Christiansen, curator of textiles at Shetland Museum and Archives. The student will be expected to develop an original thesis on the history of this form of textile production, drawing upon a wide range of sources including material artefacts, oral history and archival materials located primarily in Shetland but also in other repositories in the UK. In addition to researching the thesis the student will also collaborate with museum staff in a number of outreach activities in order to gather information and disseminate findings amongst beneficiary communities.

The successful student will be registered as a postgraduate at Glasgow University and will benefit from the extensive doctoral training programme provided for all research students. He or she will also receive training in archival and museum skills at Shetland Museum and Archives.

The ALA Scholarships application round for the 2011 intake of scholars opened on 10 March 2010. The application period closes on 30 June 2010.

The round has opened a little earlier this year in an effort to give applicants more time to apply for an offer of place and universities more time to assess the applications for admission.

The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) aim to develop leadership and build partnerships and linkages within the Asia-Pacific, while addressing priority development issues of the region.

The ALA program comprises ALA Scholarships and ALA Fellowships.

These awards are for leaders or those who have potential for leadership roles that can influence social and economic reform, both in their own countries and in the Asia-Pacific region.

As you may be aware, applicants for ALA Scholarships need to provide an Unconditional Letter of Offer from their University of choice, and documentary evidence of an IELTS or TOEFL result, taken within the previous two years, according to AusAID requirements.

Applicants need to meet your University's requirements AND AusAID's requirements; meeting one doesn't cancel out the other.

Hopefully, applicants applying to your University for a place, will use AusAID's letter of introduction, so that the assessor will be mindful of the 30 June deadline.

The Office of Public Diplomacy of the American Embassy is pleased to present its annual contest for H. Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Program to be announced. This year, the program is full scholarships to those offered to the public or private sector who have committed a proven track record of leadership, public service and the possibility of a program-defined independent studies at leading universities maximize. Since 2002, women made about 40 percent of the class Humphrey, then qualified women are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications:

The type and quality of the experience of the candidate must properly with the type of training and learning experience they are looking for. Candidates should policy makers and managers, engineers, or (except a candidate drug abuse) researchers. We encourage candidates for a project or an assignment related to their own government, organization or employer to develop. Candidates must currently be used, have the support of their employers, and to be able to leave for a period of 10-12 months.

Could Copying Homework Lead to a Course Failure

If you thought cheating was the easy, quick way to better grades, turns out you’re wrong. A new study indicates that students who cheat on homework actually learn less and are more likely to fail exams—and the overall course.

Physical Review Special Topics- Physics Education Research, a free online journal, recently published the results of a test four individual staff members from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) department of physics, conducted on students who copy homework.

The 11-page document detailed the way in which students were tested using a web-based tutorial homework system called MasteringPhysics.com. The system was used for the four largest introductory calculus-based classes in the physics department at MIT. The calculus-based intro classes are a requirement for all MIT undergrads. MasteringPhysics.com was an online homework assignment that not only tracked student’s answers but how fast they answered.

According to the document multiple problems were blocked out to students using the online system until the previous question was answered. Copying was detected by measuring how fast average students, or “real time solvers,” answered the questions compared to “quick solvers.” The “quick solvers” answered the question in less than one minute, which is insufficient time to read the problem and enter the answers, it was then inferred that these students were not intellectually engaging in the question and consequently copying their answers.

The results of the test are as follows, according to the document there is considerable research that shows that doing homework leads to greater learning. The document states that “the correlation between copying online homework and declining academic performance, relative to those who do not copy is extraordinary strong.” Finally, the most striking correlate with repeated homework copying (students that copied more than 30% of their answers) is severely declining performance relative to class average.

Conclusion: Copying Does Not Pay Off

The document concludes that online homework copying is very likely a significant fraction in overall course failure. So listen up students, not only can online homework copying be detected but it can actually lead to the eventual failure of the course. To avoid this pitfall get started on homework before its due date, give yourself ample time to complete the assignment honestly by putting in the work instead of resorting to other means. Doing the work now will pay off in the end when it comes to your final grade.

Master of Science in (theoretical or applied) informatics

The successful applicant will join a group of researchers from various disciplines working on modeling human infectious diseases, population dynamics, health economics, biostatistics and vaccinology in the framework of a basic research project entitled "Simulation Models for Infectious Disease Processes” . The role of the applicant would be to develop user-friendly simulation models of the spread of infectious diseases, and application software for epidemiologists, and to report research methods and results, both orally and written.
